Victor Boniface delivered a dramatic 93rd-minute winner as Bayer Leverkusen triumphed in a thrilling 4-3 victory over Wolfsburg at the BayArena. The seven-goal spectacle saw the defending Bundesliga champions avoid the embarrassment of failing to win their first two home matches of the season.
Wolfsburg took an early lead when Nordi Mukiele accidentally turned Mohamed Amoura’s cross into his own net within five minutes. However, Leverkusen responded quickly, with Florian Wirtz equalizing in the 14th minute through a volley from the edge of the box. Jonathan Tah then put the hosts ahead with a powerful header from an Alejandro Grimaldo corner.
Wolfsburg equalized through Sebastiaan Bornauw before taking a 3-2 lead just before halftime thanks to Mattias Svanberg’s brilliant solo effort. Leverkusen equalized again after the break when Piero Hincapie nodded in from another corner. As the champions pushed for a winner, Wolfsburg went down to 10 men following Yannick Gerhardt’s red card.
Despite valiant Wolfsburg defending, Boniface pounced on a loose ball in stoppage time, securing all three points for Leverkusen. The win provides a perfect boost ahead of their upcoming clash with Bayern Munich.
