Tragedy struck the Triathlon World Championships in Spain on Thursday as two veteran athletes, one British and one Mexican, passed away during the event in Torremolinos, near Malaga. The Mexican Triathlon Federation confirmed the death of 79-year-old Roger Mas Colomer, while British Triathlon announced the loss of one of its Age-Group competitors.
Local reports indicated that the British athlete, a 57-year-old man, died following a heart attack.
World Triathlon expressed their deepest condolences on social media, extending sympathy to the families, friends, and national federations of the athletes. Over 4,000 veteran competitors had signed up for this year’s age-group races, part of a broader field of more than 5,500 participants.
