A basketball player tragically died after collapsing mid-game during a match between Jersey and Guernsey. Jersey’s Guillaume Hoareau, 40, suffered a cardiac arrest in the third quarter of the game at Fort Regent in St Helier on Saturday, as confirmed by the Jersey Basketball Association. The game was immediately halted, and spectators were asked to leave while emergency services attended to Hoareau. Unfortunately, the Island Men’s Player and Minis Lead Coach passed away shortly afterward in the hospital.
In response to the tragedy, the Jersey Basketball Association announced the suspension of all training sessions until after half-term, allowing the coaching team time to grieve and process the loss of their dear friend and colleague. The match between Jersey and Guernsey was highly anticipated, adding to the shock and sadness felt by the local basketball community when Hoareau collapsed. His passing has left a significant void in the hearts of those who knew him.
Paying tribute, the association described Guillaume’s death as a “terrible shock to us all.” Known affectionately as “G,” he was a central figure in the basketball community, serving as an inspiration and mentor to both senior and junior players. His passion for the game and dedication to improving basketball in Jersey were well known. Guillaume proudly represented Jersey at the Island Games and was deeply committed to coaching and mentoring young players, leaving behind a legacy of enthusiasm and dedication.
