Sandro Tonali is set to return for Newcastle United after serving a 10-month ban for breaching betting rules, a moment manager Eddie Howe describes as an “incredible release” for the 23-year-old midfielder. Tonali, who joined Newcastle from AC Milan last summer for £55 million, was banned in October by the Italian Football Federation for offenses committed while playing in Serie A.

With his ban expiring on Tuesday, Tonali is eligible to play in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup match against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday. Howe confirmed that the Italian will be included in the squad, noting that while Tonali is physically fit, he lacks recent match practice. “He has worked incredibly hard to maintain his fitness,” Howe added.

Before his suspension, Tonali made 12 appearances for Newcastle, showing promise as the club’s second most expensive signing. Reflecting on the upcoming match, Howe anticipates that Tonali will experience a mix of emotions but emphasized that the focus should be on gradually reintegrating him into competitive action. “The microscope will be on him, but it’s about taking small steps,” said Howe.

Tonali’s return will not only boost Newcastle’s midfield options but also mark a significant personal milestone as he resumes his professional career after a challenging period.
