Tiger Woods matched his highest 36-hole score as a professional, shooting 156 at the British Open, resulting in his third consecutive missed cut in a major. Woods finished with a 6-over 77 at Royal Troon, which included a double bogey early in his round.
Reflecting on his performance, Woods said, “It wasn’t very good. I made a double right out of the hopper when I needed to go the other way. Just was fighting it pretty much all day. I never really hit it close enough to make birdies and consequently made a lot of bogeys.”
Woods indicated he will not play again until December, potentially at his Hero World Challenge or the PNC Championship with his son, Charlie. He played all four majors for the first time since 2019 but competed in only one other tournament, withdrawing from the Genesis Invitational in February due to illness.
Despite physical improvements, Woods struggled with consistency and sharpness. In 10 rounds at the majors this year, his average score was 75.6, and he failed to break par in all but one round.
Notably, Woods had a few good moments, including a strong par-5 sixth hole where he made an eagle. However, his overall performance was hampered by several bogeys and a significant double bogey on the second hole.
Fans gave Woods a warm reception at Royal Troon, with loud applause and a standing ovation as he finished his round. Woods expressed hope for future participation, aiming to improve his competitive form.
