Los Angeles , USA: Terence Crawford v Israil Madrimov, WBA World Interim WBO World Super Welterweight Title 3 August 2024 Picture By Mark Robinson Matchroom Boxing Terence Crawford wins

Unbeaten American boxer Terence Crawford has vacated his WBA welterweight world title, resulting in compatriot Brian Norman Jr being elevated from interim to full world champion status. This decision comes after the 36-year-old Crawford secured a world title in a fourth weight division by defeating Israil Madrimov for the WBA light-middleweight crown earlier this month.

Crawford’s move to vacate the welterweight title indicates his intent to remain in the light-middleweight division, where he is likely to pursue unification fights. Meanwhile, the 23-year-old Norman Jr, who remains undefeated with a record of 26-0, including 20 stoppages, steps up as the new WBA welterweight champion. Norman earned his interim title with a stoppage victory over Giovani Santillan in May.

As for Crawford’s future, his victory over Madrimov has set the stage for potential high-profile bouts. While a lucrative fight with Mexican superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez was initially anticipated, recent developments have cast doubt on this matchup. Instead, Crawford may face WBO light-middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora, with Saudi powerbroker Turki Alalshikh also interested in a clash between Crawford and interim titleholder Vergil Ortiz Jr.

Additionally, IBF welterweight champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis has emerged as another potential opponent for Crawford, promising an exciting future for the Omaha-born fighter as he navigates the light-middleweight division.
