Former England assistant coach Steve Holland is poised to become the next manager of Yokohama F. Marinos, according to reports in Japanese media. The 54-year-old, known for his pivotal role alongside Gareth Southgate during England’s impressive international campaigns, will reportedly take the reins ahead of the 2025 J. League season, which begins in February.

Holland’s Coaching Journey

Holland served as Southgate’s assistant for eight years, helping guide England to:

  • Two European Championship finals (2018 and 2024).
  • A World Cup semi-final in 2018.

After stepping down following England’s Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain, Holland has been without a role. His potential move to Yokohama marks his first head coaching position since managing Crewe Alexandra (2007–2008).

At the club level, Holland previously worked under several managers at Chelsea, where he honed his tactical expertise and contributed to multiple domestic and European successes. Yokohama F. Marinos, part of the City Football Group, endured a mixed 2024 campaign, finishing ninth in the 20-team J. League. Their season included:

  • Asian Champions League Final: Reached under former coach Harry Kewell but lost to Al Ain.
  • Managerial Turnover: Kewell was dismissed midway through the season, with assistant John Hutchinson serving as interim coach.

Holland inherits a talented but inconsistent squad and will aim to restore stability and push for a higher finish in 2025.

Legacy at Yokohama

The club has a tradition of success under international coaches, including former manager Ange Postecoglou, who led them to the J. League title in 2019 before moving to Tottenham Hotspur. Holland’s tactical acumen and experience with top-tier talent make him a promising addition to the Yokohama setup as they seek a return to glory.

This appointment signals a new chapter for Holland and Yokohama, with fans eagerly awaiting how his international pedigree translates to success in Japan.
