Western Sydney Wanderers coach Alen Stajcic has criticized remarks made by Juan Mata’s agent, Fahid Ben Khalfallah, regarding the Spanish star’s limited playing time. The 36-year-old World Cup winner, who joined the A-League club in September, has primarily featured as a substitute, including in the team’s 4-2 derby loss to Sydney FC on Saturday.
Ben Khalfallah reportedly labeled Mata’s lack of minutes “disrespectful,” a claim Stajcic dismissed as unwarranted. “His comments were out of order and cowardly,” Stajcic said post-match. “I don’t need to talk to agents when their players aren’t playing.” He emphasized that his decisions were based on the team’s needs rather than external pressure.
Despite limited appearances, Mata remains a valued player within the squad, according to Stajcic. “He had some good moments today, and we want more of those,” the coach stated, hinting at expectations for Mata’s contributions when given opportunities.
Mata, whose illustrious career includes a 2010 World Cup victory and Champions League and Europa League titles with Chelsea and Manchester United, signed a one-year deal after leaving Japan’s Vissel Kobe, where he struggled for game time. His current challenge lies in adapting to his new role while contributing to the Wanderers’ campaign.
