Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min has expressed his desire to be remembered as a club legend but admits he still has work to do before earning that title. As he nears a decade with Spurs, the 32-year-old South Korean forward has made over 500 appearances and formed a prolific partnership with Harry Kane, who left for Bayern Munich last summer.
Despite consistently scoring at least 14 league goals in each of the past eight seasons, Son believes his legacy will be cemented only by winning silverware with Tottenham. “I still don’t think I am a legend of this club. I want to win something with Spurs, then I want to be very happy to be called a legend,” Son told BBC Sport.
Last season, Son scored 17 Premier League goals as Tottenham finished fifth. However, he has set no specific personal targets for this season, focusing instead on pushing himself and the team to achieve as much as possible.
Since being named Tottenham captain last August, replacing Hugo Lloris, Son has embraced the responsibility, despite the challenges it brings. He strives to lead by example, particularly for the young players in the squad, aiming to maintain high standards both on and off the pitch as Spurs continue their quest for their first major trophy since 2008.
