World number one Jannik Sinner continued his remarkable year by defeating Frances Tiafoe in straight sets to win the Cincinnati Open title. The 23-year-old Italian secured a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 victory over the American, claiming his fifth title of the season in just one hour and 37 minutes.
Despite battling a hip issue throughout the tournament, Sinner showed resilience, especially in the first set, which he won in a tie-break. He then dominated the second set to seal the win. This victory makes Sinner the youngest men’s champion in Cincinnati since Andy Murray won the title in 2008 at the age of 21.
Reflecting on his win, Sinner acknowledged the challenges of the week: “It was very tough mentally. Had such an amazing run here, and I tried to do my best today. We both were quite tired from the semi-finals.”
Sinner’s victory in Cincinnati adds to his successful year, which began with his maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January. He has also secured titles in Rotterdam, Miami, and Halle this season.
With the US Open looming, Sinner’s focus now shifts to Flushing Meadows, where he will aim to cap off an already stellar year with another Grand Slam triumph. “Now, for sure, it’s important to recover, to be ready for New York,” Sinner said. “This is our main goal here for this US swing.”
