World number one Scottie Scheffler will sit out The Sentry event in January after suffering a freak injury on Christmas Day. The PGA Tour confirmed that Scheffler sustained a puncture wound to his right hand while preparing dinner, sidelining him for several weeks as the 2025 season kicks off.
“Small glass fragments remained in the palm which required surgery,” said Scheffler’s manager, Blake Smith, in a statement. “He has been told that he should be back to 100% in three to four weeks.”
A Stellar 2024 Cut Short
The injury puts a damper on Scheffler’s remarkable 2024 season, during which he:
- Held the world number one ranking for the entire year.
- Won the Masters for the second time.
- Retained the Players Championship and claimed Olympic gold.
- Captured the FedExCup title, marking one of the most dominant campaigns in recent PGA Tour history.
What’s Next for Scheffler?
Scheffler is expected to recover fully within a month, giving him time to prepare for upcoming tournaments as the 2025 season gains momentum. While his absence at The Sentry will be a disappointment for fans, his exceptional 2024 achievements ensure he remains the golfer to watch when he returns.
The Sentry Tournament of Champions, scheduled at the Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii, will now see the world number one title left vacant, setting the stage for a competitive season opener.
