Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim, the frontrunner to replace recently sacked Erik ten Hag as Manchester United’s manager, stated on Tuesday that “nothing is decided yet” about his potential move. Sporting confirmed that United are prepared to meet Amorim’s €10 million (£8.3 million) release clause, though the 39-year-old Portuguese coach remains non-committal about his future.
Amorim, who led Sporting to two Portuguese titles, has quickly become one of Europe’s most promising young managers. Although he was linked with top roles, including Liverpool, he expressed pride in his current position at Sporting. Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has taken over as interim boss, yet United’s focus on Amorim underscores their commitment to a new direction. Notably, Brighton’s young coach Fabian Hurzeler praised Amorim’s “incredible football,” suggesting his tactical approach could benefit United.
Under Ten Hag, United achieved early success with a 2023 League Cup victory, ending a six-year silverware drought. However, the Dutchman’s tenure was marred by inconsistent results, costly injuries, and underperforming signings such as Brazilian Antony. Despite a major financial outlay exceeding £600 million, including high-profile players from Ten Hag’s former club Ajax, United’s lack of a clear playing style and elimination from the Champions League group stage compounded pressure on the manager.
Ten Hag had expressed optimism about his long-term prospects, hinting that a trophy in his third season would signify success.
