Rotherham United have parted ways with head coach Leam Richardson, a move that comes on the heels of their relegation to League One, which was sealed two weeks ago. This decision marks the culmination of a challenging season for the Millers, who find themselves a staggering 22 points adrift of safety with only three games remaining.
Richardson assumed the role in December following the dismissal of Matt Taylor, but his tenure saw limited success, with just two wins in 24 matches. In a statement released by the club, they confirmed the commencement of the search for a new first-team manager, promising further updates in the near future. Additionally, assistant coach Rob Kelly has also departed from the South Yorkshire club.
Rotherham’s managerial upheaval adds them to the list of six Championship teams, including Huddersfield, Birmingham, Millwall, Plymouth, and Sunderland, that have undergone multiple managerial changes this season. Richardson, who had been absent from coaching for a year prior to his appointment as Taylor’s successor, inherited a team rooted to the bottom of the table a position they maintained throughout his tenure.
The confirmation of relegation came with a 1-0 defeat at home to Plymouth on April 5th, followed by subsequent losses to West Brom and Swansea. Last season’s survival in the second tier halted a streak of six seasons during which Rotherham oscillated between promotion to and relegation from the Championship. Their upcoming fixture against Birmingham City on Saturday presents one of their final opportunities to salvage pride in their penultimate home game of the season.
