The head of Wales football has assured everyone that Rob Page will keep his job as the national team manager, even though they didn’t make it to the Euro 2024 finals.
Steve Williams, the president of the Football Association of Wales, acted fast to clear any uncertainties about Page’s position. This decision follows their loss to Poland in a penalty shootout during Tuesday night’s play-off final. Page, aged 49, had already signed a contract in 2022 to guide the team until the next World Cup.
Williams affirmed, “The FAW can confirm Rob Page is their manager for the forthcoming campaign in accordance with his contract. Rob is the manager. His contract runs to the end of the World Cup and that is how we continue to work.” He emphasized that there will still be a review of the latest camp and campaign as usual. However, there’s no inclination within the association to oust Page at this moment as they believe the team is still evolving under his leadership.
Despite the defeat to Poland, Page asserted he’s “absolutely” the right person to guide Wales into the Nations League and the 2026 World Cup.Tensions between Page and FAW chief executive Noel Mooney arose during the campaign, but discussions were held to resolve issues, reportedly initiated by Williams.
The Welsh squad has also expressed support for the Rhondda-born manager. Page, who steered Wales to their first World Cup since 1958 during the qualification for the Qatar tournament in 2022, has been at the helm since November 2020, initially as an interim manager, before assuming the role permanently.
He took over from Ryan Giggs, who was embroiled in legal proceedings. Wales will kick off their Nations League campaign against Turkey in September.
