Marcus Rashford and Jordan Henderson have been excluded from Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man England squad for Euro 2024. Manchester United forward Rashford, 26, has struggled this season, managing only seven goals and two assists in 33 league appearances. Although he featured in seven England games this season, he was omitted from the squad for the match against Belgium in March. Rashford took to social media, sharing a screenshot of the training squad and wishing “Gareth and the boys all the best” for the upcoming tournament.
Jordan Henderson, who joined Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia from Liverpool last summer, later moved to a struggling Ajax side in January. Despite this, Southgate continued to select him following his transfer to the Saudi Pro League. Henderson faced criticism from England fans, who booed him during his first game back in the country against Australia at Wembley in October, a reaction that Southgate described as “defying logic.” Henderson was included in the squad for the March friendlies against Brazil and Belgium but did not play in those matches.
Southgate faces the task of trimming the provisional squad by at least seven players to finalize the list of up to 26 players for the tournament in Germany. The final squad must be confirmed by midnight on 7 June. The omission of Rashford and Henderson indicates the depth of talent Southgate has at his disposal, as he makes the difficult decisions to shape his team for Euro 2024.
