Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson has explained his decision to leave 18-year-old Tyler Young, son of Everton veteran Ashley Young, on the bench during their FA Cup clash. Despite the emotional pull of giving the young player his chance, Ferguson prioritized his team’s strategy in a closely contested match.

“It was very difficult to leave Tyler on the bench, but I’ve got to do what I think is best for the team,” Ferguson said.

Game Situation Dictated Decision

With Peterborough trailing 1-0, Ferguson opted for a more experienced forward to chase an equalizer, rather than giving Young his debut.

“If the game had been 2-0 at that point, I would’ve put him on. But at 1-0, I had to get a forward on. I’ve got to try and get something out of the game.”

Ferguson’s comments highlight the fine balance between developing young talent and managing a high-stakes match.

Responding to Criticism

Ferguson also addressed criticism from an opposing player, who he claims challenged his decision:

“One of their players had a pop at me, which was bang out of order. We are not a charity case.”

While the decision might have disappointed Tyler Young and fans hoping to see the young talent in action, Ferguson emphasized his responsibility to prioritize the team’s needs over sentimentality.

This decision underscores the tough calls managers face, balancing player development opportunities with the tactical demands of competitive football.
