Italian high jumper Gianmarco Tamberi, the reigning Olympic champion, has been hospitalized just days before he is set to begin his title defense at the Paris Olympic Games. The 32-year-old athlete reported experiencing a sharp pain in his side, leading to a hospital visit where he underwent a CT scan, ultrasound, and blood tests, which suggested a probable kidney stone.

Tamberi’s Iconic Tokyo Victory

Shared Gold Medal in Tokyo: Tamberi made headlines at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 when he and Qatar’s Mutaz Barshim decided to share the gold medal in the high jump. Both athletes achieved the same height and, after consulting with event officials, opted for a joint victory, creating one of the Games’ most memorable moments.

Current Health Situation

Hospitalization: Tamberi posted a photo from his hospital bed on social media, expressing disbelief at his situation. He mentioned having a fever of 38.8°C (101.8°F) and described himself as “helpless” just three days before his competition begins.
Determination to Compete: Despite his health scare, Tamberi remains determined to compete. He has postponed his travel to Paris until Monday but is committed to participating in the qualifying round on Wednesday. He stated, “I don’t know how I will get there, but I will be there on that platform and I will give my soul until the last jump, whatever my condition will be.”

Upcoming Competition

Paris Olympics Schedule: The high jump qualifying competition is scheduled for Wednesday morning, with the final taking place on Sunday. Tamberi’s participation is highly anticipated, given his remarkable performance in Tokyo and his status as a fan favorite.

Tamberi’s resilience and determination to defend his title, despite his current health challenges, underscore his dedication to the sport. The athletic community and fans worldwide are hopeful for his recovery and successful participation in the Games.
