Mike Phelan, the former Manchester United assistant manager, has reunited with Wayne Rooney to take on the role of assistant head coach at Plymouth Argyle, the club announced.

Phelan, 62, brings a wealth of experience from a distinguished coaching career, including a nine-year stint at Manchester United under the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson and later Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Rooney, who took charge at Plymouth earlier this season, praised Phelan’s credentials and familiarity with his coaching philosophy:

“Mike is someone I know well, having worked with him when I was a player at Manchester United. He has vast experience at the highest level of football, and I am really pleased to bring him to Argyle.”

Phelan’s appointment comes at a challenging time for Plymouth, who are struggling in the Championship with just one win in their last nine matches.

A Partnership Rekindled

Phelan’s extensive experience in top-flight football, particularly his time at United mentoring players like Rooney, will be crucial in stabilizing Plymouth’s campaign. The duo’s reunion signals a proactive effort to reverse the club’s fortunes and re-establish momentum in the fiercely competitive second tier of English football.

Phelan is set to begin his duties immediately as Plymouth seeks to climb out of their current slump and move up the Championship standings.
