Fifth seed Daniil Medvedev advanced to the fourth round of the US Open with a solid 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Italian Flavio Cobolli on a humid Saturday night. The 2021 champion, now the only former New York winner left in the men’s draw after early exits by Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, continued his bid for a second Grand Slam title.
Medvedev, known for his remarkable court coverage, navigated long and taxing rallies against Cobolli, showcasing his defensive prowess that has earned him the nickname “Octopus.” After an early exchange of breaks in the first set, Medvedev broke twice to secure the opener and edged a close second set, tightening his grip on the match.
Both players found serving challenging in the third set, trading breaks before Medvedev steadied to close out the victory. Despite the tricky conditions, Medvedev was pleased with his performance and cautious about the competition ahead, stating, “If I play good tennis, I can win the whole thing.”
Medvedev will face Portuguese Nuno Borges in the fourth round as he looks to continue his run in a wide-open men’s draw.
