The Dallas Mavericks clinched a nail-biting victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder, winning 117-116 to advance to the NBA Western Conference Finals. PJ Washington’s crucial free throws in the final seconds sealed the win for the Mavericks in a dramatic game. The victory completed a 4-2 series win for Dallas, who will now face either the Denver Nuggets or the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Mavericks overcame a significant 75-58 deficit in the third quarter to lead 115-110 with just over a minute remaining. However, the Thunder responded with six unanswered points, setting up a tense finish. Washington was fouled by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander while attempting a three-pointer with 2.5 seconds left. He made the first two free throws and intentionally missed the third.
Despite securing the rebound, the Thunder failed to capitalize as Jalen Williams’ long-range shot missed its mark. Luka Doncic led Dallas with a stellar performance, scoring 29 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists, marking the Mavericks’ second conference finals appearance in three years.
Reflecting on the win, Dallas’ Kyrie Irving expressed relief at closing out the series. “It definitely feels good to get the series done,” Irving said. Meanwhile, Gilgeous-Alexander, who scored 36 points for the Thunder, lamented his late-game foul. “If I had the moment back I wouldn’t have fouled him; let him make or miss the shot,” he said. The Mavericks will now prepare for the conference finals, set to begin on June 6.
