Marseille have completed the signing of forward Mason Greenwood from Manchester United in a deal valued up to 31.6 million euros (£26.6m). Greenwood, 22, who came through United’s academy, has not played for the Premier League club since January 2022 and spent last season on loan at Getafe in La Liga. Serious charges against him, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February 2023.
The announcement of Marseille’s intention to sign Greenwood sparked criticism from the city’s mayor. Despite this, the French club proceeded with the transfer, securing Greenwood on a contract until 2029.
Greenwood made his senior debut for Manchester United in 2019 against Paris St-Germain in the Champions League. Over his time with the club, he scored 35 goals in 129 appearances and earned a single England cap in 2020.
In August 2023, Manchester United and Greenwood agreed to part ways following a six-month internal investigation into his conduct. He then joined Getafe on loan, where he scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 36 appearances, helping to rejuvenate his career.
Manchester United have wished Greenwood well and included a significant sell-on clause in the deal with Marseille.
Greenwood could make his first appearance back in England since his arrest in January 2022 in a pre-season friendly against Sunderland on 3 August. The match will take place at Bradford City’s Valley Parade due to renovation work at the Stadium of Light. This game holds additional significance as Greenwood was born in Bradford.
