England Rugby ushers in a new era as Maro Itoje is confirmed as captain for the Six Nations, replacing Jamie George. Head coach Steve Borthwick announced the decision while unveiling the 36-man squad for the tournament.

Itoje, 30, brings a wealth of experience with 88 caps and a stellar leadership record at Saracens. Borthwick praised him as a “calm, influential leader” with a strong rapport with players and coaches. Despite stepping down as captain, George will serve as vice-captain and remain a key figure in the squad.

Itoje expressed his excitement, saying, “It’s an incredible privilege to lead this team. With the support of senior players and the achievements of Jamie to build on, I feel ready for this responsibility.”

Squad Highlights

The squad features notable omissions, including Dan Cole and Ben Spencer, while uncapped Harlequins players Oscar Beard and Cadan Murley get their first call-ups. Luke Cowan-Dickie’s exceptional form may see him replace George as the starting hooker.

England’s Challenge Ahead

England kicks off their Six Nations campaign against Ireland on February 1 in Dublin. They hope to rebound from a disappointing Autumn Nations Series, where they suffered narrow losses to New Zealand, South Africa, and Australia, despite a dominant win over Japan.

Borthwick and Itoje face the task of revitalizing a team that finished third in last year’s Six Nations and rebuilding momentum as they prepare for a pivotal showdown at the Aviva Stadium.
