Saracens lock Maro Itoje has been cleared of a dangerous tackle citation, ensuring his availability for the upcoming Premiership matches. Following Saracens’ victory over Bath, Itoje faced scrutiny for an incident involving Bath’s Alfie Barbeary during the match.
Despite initially receiving a yellow card for the challenge, an independent disciplinary panel dismissed the citing, allowing Itoje to play immediately. This decision provides a significant boost for Saracens as they approach crucial fixtures against Bristol and Sale Sharks.
During the game, Itoje’s tackle on Bath’s number eight resulted in head contact, prompting the citing. However, the panel, chaired by Philip Evans KC, thoroughly reviewed the evidence, including multiple angles of the incident. Their analysis concluded that the level of danger perceived in the tackle did not warrant further punishment.
Notably, the panel considered the sequence of events, determining that the contact with the head was more glancing than direct, ultimately upholding the on-field decision and allowing Itoje to continue playing without facing a ban.
Saracens, the reigning Premiership champions, currently occupy the second spot in the table with two regular-season games remaining. Itoje’s availability for these crucial matches strengthens Saracens’ chances as they strive for success in the Premiership campaign.
