Despite a late scare when West Ham had a second goal disallowed by VAR for handball, City’s win was never seriously in doubt.
This victory capped a remarkable run of 19 wins and four draws since their last league defeat at Aston Villa on December 6. Manchester City has now claimed six of the past seven Premier League titles, joining an elite group of teams like Huddersfield, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United, who have won the top flight three years in a row. However, Pep Guardiola’s squad has now achieved an unprecedented feat by winning four consecutive titles, something no other men’s side has managed since the English league was formed in 1888, 136 years ago.
On May 25, City will aim to become the first team to complete the domestic Double in successive seasons when they face Manchester United in the FA Cup final at Wembley. This historic achievement comes 15 months after City were charged with 115 Premier League violations for alleged financial irregularities, charges they strongly deny. While both Everton and Nottingham Forest were charged and penalized for breaching profit and sustainability rules earlier this season, there has yet to be an update on when City’s case will be heard.
