Luton Town have completed the signing of former Chelsea and Nigeria international Victor Moses on a free transfer. The 33-year-old versatile wingback and attacker has returned to England, where his career began, after leaving Russian Premier Liga side Spartak Moscow at the end of last season.
Moses had joined Spartak Moscow permanently in 2021 after a successful loan spell from Chelsea. During his time in Russia, he made 84 appearances, scored 10 goals, and provided 10 assists, helping the team win the Russian Cup in 2022 and featuring in the Europa League. Despite being released in the summer, Moses continued training and impressed Luton’s coaching staff, ultimately earning a spot in the squad.
Speaking about the signing, Luton Town manager Rob Edwards expressed his enthusiasm for adding Moses to the team:
“Victor is one we’ve been talking to for quite a while. He trained with us last week and played 60 minutes in a behind-closed-doors game. He gives us more strength in depth and versatility because he’s someone who can play both sides or as a number ten. He’s played for so many different clubs in different ways and under different managers, so he’s tactically aware. He’s fit, he’s able to come in and affect it now, and he definitely makes the squad stronger.”
Moses began his career at Crystal Palace, scoring 11 goals in 69 appearances before moving to Wigan Athletic in 2010. In 2012, he joined Chelsea, where he won the Premier League, FA Cup, and Europa League, primarily under Antonio Conte. Despite his success, much of his time was spent on loan to clubs including Liverpool, West Ham, Stoke City, Inter Milan, and Fenerbahce.
Internationally, Moses earned 38 caps for Nigeria, playing in two World Cups and helping the Super Eagles win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. Edwards highlighted Moses’ wealth of experience and humility, praising his willingness to join the club:
“He’s had a fantastic career, been there and done it. He’s got an amazing CV. But alongside that, he’s a really good lad, a quiet, unassuming, down-to-earth person. What tells you about his humility is that he’s been willing to come in, basically on trial with us, to show how hungry he is to play for Luton Town. We are really excited about working with him.”
Moses will provide valuable experience and depth to Luton Town as they aim for a return to the Premier League this season.
