Luke Littler’s World Grand Prix Darts debut ended in disappointment as he suffered a first-round defeat to Rob Cross, losing 2-1. The 17-year-old, who had been one of the tournament favorites, now faces the frustration of back-to-back early exits in major competitions, following his first-round defeat at the hands of Michael van Gerwen at the World Matchplay in July.
Littler struggled despite hitting four 180s in the first set, and his issues with doubles proved costly. Although he managed to level the match in the second set, Rob Cross, the 2018 World Champion, held firm and finished with a bullseye to secure victory. Littler acknowledged his performance on social media, expressing disappointment but also vowing to bounce back.
Cross praised Littler, calling him “a phenomenon” and noting the significance of the win, especially considering his own struggles in the tournament in previous years. Cross will face Germany’s Martin Schindler in the second round.
Meanwhile, reigning champion Luke Humphries advanced after a thrilling comeback win against Stephen Bunting, recovering from a set and two legs down to win 2-1.
