Jiri Lehecka pulled off a major upset at the Cincinnati Open, defeating former World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev in straight sets, 7-6(2), 6-4, during the second round on Wednesday evening. Medvedev, the 2019 champion, struggled with his serve, landing just 44% of his first serves and committing seven double faults, which proved costly.

Lehecka, returning from a back injury that had sidelined him since Madrid, showcased fearless tennis, hitting 17 forehand winners. The Czech player, who had not played for over two months, called the victory over Medvedev one of the best of his career, marking his return to the big stage with a statement win.

Next up for Lehecka is American Frances Tiafoe, who convincingly defeated Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-2. Tiafoe’s aggressive play and strong serving saw him dominate the in-form Italian, setting the stage for an exciting match against Lehecka in the third round. Tiafoe, who has been gaining momentum on hard courts since Atlanta, will look to continue his strong form in front of the home crowd.
