Lee Carsley, the current England Under-21 manager, will take charge of the senior national team on an interim basis for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures. This decision follows the resignation of Gareth Southgate, who stepped down after England’s loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

Carsley, 50, will lead England in their matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland in September. Known for his success with the England Under-21 team, including winning the 2023 U21 European Championship, Carsley is stepping up while the Football Association (FA) searches for a permanent successor to Southgate.

Several candidates are reportedly in the running for the permanent role, including Newcastle’s Eddie Howe, Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna, and former Chelsea managers Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino. The FA has not confirmed Carsley’s interim role, but FA chief executive Mark Bullingham previously mentioned having an “interim solution” ready if needed.

Carsley brings extensive experience from his time with England’s youth teams and a 17-year playing career with clubs like Derby County and Everton. As the FA continues its search for a permanent manager, Carsley will aim to guide England successfully through the Nations League matches.
