Chelsea forward Lauren James will be absent from England’s Euro 2025 qualifiers against France because of a foot injury. Despite training on Thursday, the 22-year-old was deemed not fully fit, as she had been managing an existing injury. Tottenham’s Jessica Naz has been called up from the standby list to replace her.
“Lauren had some foot problems from her club, and we hoped she could build up, but it’s just too early, so unfortunately, she can’t stay with us,” said England head coach Sarina Wiegman. “It’s disappointing for everyone. She tried her best, and so did we, but it’s just too soon. To compete, you have to be at peak fitness.”
Wiegman expressed confidence in Naz, stating, “Jess is ready. She has impressed in training this week and with her club, so we have to move forward.”
England’s fixture at St James’ Park on Friday night (20:00 BST kick-off) is the first of two back-to-back matches against group leaders France, who are ranked third in the world. James will also miss the second match in Saint-Etienne next Tuesday.
In addition to James, England has also lost defenders Niamh Charles and Lotte Wubben-Moy to injury this week. However, Wiegman can finally pair centre-backs Leah Williamson and Millie Bright, who will be playing together for the first time since February 2023.
“It’s great to have them both back,” Wiegman remarked. “The competition within the team is fierce, even without Millie. I hope I have to make some tough decisions, as it reflects the depth and quality of this squad.”
