James Maddison Excluded from England’s Final Euro 2024 Squad

James Maddison will not be part of England’s 26-man squad for Euro 2024. The Tottenham midfielder was initially included in Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man selection but has been cut from the final list. Maddison, who came off the bench in England’s 3-0 friendly win against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Monday, is one of seven players left out ahead of the tournament.

The 27-year-old has earned seven senior caps for England and was included in the squad for the 2022 World Cup, although he did not make an appearance in Qatar. Maddison joined Tottenham last summer in a £40 million transfer from Leicester City. Despite a promising start, his season was marred by injuries, leading to an inconsistent performance.

Gareth Southgate will announce the final 26-man squad on Saturday, following England’s last warm-up friendly against Iceland at Wembley on Friday. Maddison’s exclusion comes as Southgate trims the squad down, with six other players also facing the cut.

While Maddison misses out, Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw remains in contention. Shaw returned to training on Wednesday after recovering from a lengthy injury lay-off, adding a potential boost to England’s defensive options for the tournament in Germany.

The final squad announcement will be crucial as Southgate finalizes his team for Euro 2024, aiming to balance experience and form in a bid to bring home the championship.
