Honduras will play their next home game without fans after an incident during their 2-0 win over Mexico in the CONCACAF Nations League quarter-final. Mexico coach Javier Aguirre was struck on the head by a can thrown from the stands in San Pedro Sula, leaving him with a bleeding wound. The incident occurred as Aguirre approached Honduras coach Reinaldo Rueda for a post-match handshake.
CONCACAF announced the punishment on Monday, which includes a fine for the Honduran Football Federation due to inadequate security measures. In a statement, the governing body confirmed that Honduras must play their next CONCACAF competition match behind closed doors.
Meanwhile, CONCACAF also opened a separate investigation into Aguirre’s conduct during the match. The second leg of the quarter-final will be held in Mexico later on Tuesday, where both teams will battle for a spot in the semi-finals.
