Defending champions Germany got off to a perfect start in the United Cup on Sunday, clinching a 2-0 lead over Brazil in Perth. World number two Alexander Zverev and Laura Siegemund delivered stellar performances, ensuring the South Americans’ elimination from group play after an earlier loss to China.

Zverev sealed the victory with a commanding 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Thiago Monteiro, following Siegemund’s hard-fought 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win against Beatriz Haddad Maia, ranked 17th in the world.

“This is the first time we’ve ever been up 2-0,” Zverev said, reflecting on Germany’s improved start compared to last year’s title-winning campaign. Germany will face China on Monday to determine which team advances to the quarter-finals.

Zverev and Siegemund Shine

Zverev broke Monteiro’s serve early in both sets and maintained control in an 80-minute contest. Meanwhile, Siegemund endured a marathon match, overcoming a second-set stumble to claim victory after two-and-a-half hours. “It’s good to pull your best game out of the pocket in the first match of the season,” Siegemund said.

Ruud Battles but Norway Falls to Czech Republic

In Sydney, world number six Casper Ruud delivered a gutsy 7-6 (7/6), 5-7, 6-4 victory over Tomas Machac, but his efforts weren’t enough to prevent Norway’s loss to the Czech Republic.

Casper Ruud def. Machac 7-6 (7/6), 5-7, 6-4

Ruud’s three-hour battle included an early third-set break, but his nine break points faced and a left quad issue could signal concerns for the season ahead. “If every match is going to be this tough, it’s going to be a tough year,” Ruud admitted.

Muchova, ranked 22nd and a 2023 French Open finalist, showcased dominance in her singles match and combined with Machac to win the mixed doubles decider.

The United Cup continues with key evening ties, including Switzerland vs. Italy and the Coco Gauff-led United States facing Canada in Perth. Germany and China’s high-stakes clash on Monday will determine the next step in the defending champions’ journey.
