In tribute to the late German football legend Franz Beckenbauer, the city of Munich will rename a street next to Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena. Currently known as Werner Heisenberg Allee, the street will soon be called Franz Beckenbauer Platz, as announced by the city council. The renaming will take place on January 7, 2025, marking the first anniversary of Beckenbauer’s passing at age 78.

The Allianz Arena, which is scheduled to host the Champions League final in May 2025, will have its official address as Franz Beckenbauer Platz 5, reflecting Beckenbauer’s iconic shirt number. Known as ‘Der Kaiser,’ Beckenbauer is regarded as one of the greatest footballers in history, having won the World Cup both as a player and a coach, alongside multiple Ballon d’Ors, European Cups, and league titles.

Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter emphasized the city’s deep respect for Beckenbauer, stating that renaming a street is the highest honour Munich can bestow posthumously. Reiter highlighted how Beckenbauer’s achievements and charisma have left an indelible impact on both German football and the city’s identity.

Additionally, a statue of Beckenbauer will be installed outside the stadium, joining the likeness of his former Bayern and Germany teammate, Gerd Mueller. This will further commemorate Beckenbauer’s contributions to the world of football.
