Former Brazilian footballer Robinho has been arrested to serve a nine-year prison sentence for his involvement in the gang rape of an Albanian woman at a nightclub in Milan in 2013.
The 40-year-old was convicted in Italy two years ago, and despite attempts to avoid extradition, the Brazilian justice system upheld the decision for him to serve his sentence in Brazil.
The court ruled against house arrest, and a Supreme Court judge rejected a request to halt his detention, signaling a decisive stance against potential evasion of justice due to his fame and wealth.
Robinho, who has 100 caps for Brazil, had played for AC Milan at the time of the crime and lost his appeal before Italy’s highest court in 2022. He claims the encounter was consensual.
