Nelly Korda, the reigning champion, has decided to withdraw from the upcoming LPGA Tour event this week, citing the need for rest following her recent triumph at the Chevron Championship, where she secured her second major title. The victory marked her fifth consecutive win on the tour, a remarkable feat that puts her in the esteemed company of legends like Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam, who achieved similar streaks in 1978 and 2004-05, respectively.
Expressing her exhaustion after enduring the mental and physical demands of four events in the past five weeks, the world number one penned a statement on social media. “After grinding through the mental and physical challenges of four events in the past five weeks, I am definitely feeling exhausted,” she wrote. “With so much still to come throughout 2024, I feel I need to listen to my body and get some rest, so I can be ready for the remainder of the season.”
Korda’s phenomenal run commenced with her victory at the LPGA Drive On Championship in late January. Following a seven-week break, she returned in late March, clinching three consecutive titles – the Fir Hills Seri Pak Championship, Ford Championship, and T-Mobile Match Play – before her triumphant performance at the Chevron Championship.
Despite her absence from the upcoming JM Eagle LA Championship, Korda assured her fans that she would be supporting her peers from a distance. Her next anticipated appearance on the LPGA Tour is slated for the Cognizant Founders Cup in New Jersey, commencing on May 9th.
