Southgate, announcing a 25-man squad for matches against Brazil and Belgium, disclosed that despite Ben White’s impressive performance for Arsenal, he has indicated that he does not wish to be included in the squad.
Ben White, who has earned four caps for England and recently signed a new four-year contract with Arsenal, returned home during the 2022 Qatar World Cup due to personal reasons.
Despite this, Southgate emphasized that the opportunity remains open for White to rejoin the national team. He expressed understanding of the potential for backlash but highlighted White’s commitment to Arsenal, stating that he would have preferred to include him in the squad.
“In previous scenarios, I’ve aimed to shield players, but that’s not feasible in this case. Given the timing of Ben White’s request to be removed from our squad’s long-list, it’s important to be transparent about our current situation.
We’ve informed Arsenal about our decision and stand by it. While the door remains open, it’s unlikely White will be considered for the Euros due to the circumstances this month.”
Looking ahead, I remain hopeful that Ben White’s stance may change. I can’t deny his deserving place in the squad. However, Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu, informed FA chief John McDermott that White still maintained his decision.
Arsenal confirmed White’s contract extension until 2028 yesterday morning, anticipating questions about him. Southgate reiterated his respect for White’s decision, acknowledging a conversation post-Qatar where White expressed hesitation.
While unsure of the reasons behind White’s decision, Southgate emphasized there are no issues between them or with England’s assistant manager, Steve Holland, despite speculation suggesting otherwise.
