Australia’s most decorated Olympian, Emma McKeon, announced her retirement on Monday, closing a remarkable chapter in swimming history. Over her illustrious career, McKeon claimed 14 Olympic medals, including six golds, and 20 medals at world championships. Her final competitive appearance at the Paris Olympics saw her contribute to Australia’s record-breaking campaign with gold, silver, and bronze in relays. McKeon’s legacy began at the Rio 2016 Olympics, where she won her first gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay, two silver medals in relays, and a bronze in the 200m freestyle. However, her peak came at Tokyo 2021, where she earned an astounding seven medals, including individual golds in the 100m and 50m freestyle, cementing her as one of the most accomplished Olympians of all time. Swimming Australia’s coach, Rohan Taylor, praised her resilience and leadership, while her uncle, Rob Woodhouse, highlighted her iconic Tokyo 100m freestyle victory, where she edged out Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey by 0.31 seconds.
