This result extended Dortmund’s unbeaten home league streak on Friday nights to an impressive 37 matches, dating back to 2004. Despite Heidenheim’s brief reign at the summit following a 4-0 win over Augsburg, Dortmund quickly ensured their stay was short-lived.
Donyell Malen opened the scoring early with a low shot from the edge of the area, following a setup from Adeyemi. The latter then doubled the lead with a curling finish after a swift counterattack involving Julian Brandt. Heidenheim, undeterred, halved the deficit through Marvin Pieringer, who headed in from an Omar Haktab Traoré cross.
Dortmund remained dominant, with Adeyemi striking again to restore the two-goal cushion. Although Heidenheim pulled one back via a Maximilian Breunig penalty after Niklas Süle’s foul on Mikkel Kaufmann, Dortmund sealed the game when Emre Can converted a stoppage-time penalty, awarded for Traoré’s handball.
Heidenheim’s loss ends their brief stint at the top of the table, while Dortmund’s win could be short-lived if Bayern Munich or RB Leipzig claim victories later in the weekend. Nonetheless, Heidenheim’s historic season continues, with European football on the horizon.
