England’s versatile batter, Dawid Malan, has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 36. Known for his remarkable ability to perform across all formats, Malan stands out as one of only two Englishmen, alongside Jos Buttler, to have scored a century in Tests, ODIs, and T20s. Over his career, he featured in 22 Tests, 30 ODIs, and 62 T20 matches for England.
Malan achieved the distinction of becoming the world’s top-ranked T20 batter in 2020 and holds the record for being the fastest to 1,000 runs in T20 internationals, reaching the milestone in just 24 innings. A crucial part of the 2022 T20 World Cup-winning squad, Malan hasn’t played for England since the 50-over World Cup in November of the previous year. Reflecting on his career, he expressed satisfaction with his achievements while acknowledging that many players retire feeling they could have done more.
Despite his accomplishments in white-ball cricket, Malan admitted to some disappointment in his Test career. With 1,074 runs at an average of 27.53 in Tests, he felt his performances were inconsistent, though he believed he could have contributed more. In ODIs, he tallied 1,450 runs with an impressive average of 55.76, and he ranks as England’s fourth-highest T20 run-scorer, amassing 1,892 runs at an average of 36.38.
Born in London but raised in South Africa, Malan returned to the UK to join Middlesex in 2006, later moving to Yorkshire in 2020. Transitioning to a white-ball specialist role, he signed a limited-overs contract and began a part-time coaching stint with Yorkshire in early 2024. Apart from his international career, Malan continues to play in franchise leagues worldwide, including the IPL, Big Bash, and The Hundred.
