Darwin Núñez Involved in Clash with Fans

Liverpool striker Darwin Núñez was involved in a physical altercation with spectators following Uruguay’s 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Copa America semi-final on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, where Núñez confronted Colombia fans in the stands after the final whistle.

According to Uruguayan outlet El Pais, the disorder erupted near the section where the friends and family members of the players were seated. Núñez was seen climbing railings and making his way into the crowded stands, where he physically confronted fans as others attempted to restrain him.

The clash was captured by TV cameras and fans, showing Núñez’s intense altercation amidst a chaotic scene. Other Uruguay players reportedly joined the fray, defending their families from the disorderly crowd.

Uruguay captain José María Giménez commented on the situation, describing it as a “disaster” and blaming a lack of police presence for the need to protect their families. Giménez suggested that the incident was sparked by a few individuals who had consumed too much alcohol.

The on-field tension was high as well, with players and coaching staff clashing shortly after the match concluded. Núñez, who started the game for Uruguay, was unable to convert any of his four attempts on goal.

Since joining Liverpool for an initial £64 million from Benfica in June 2022, Núñez has scored 20 goals in 65 appearances for the club. The incident following the semi-final has garnered significant attention, and BBC News has reached out to Núñez’s representative for comment.

Colombia’s victory over Uruguay secures their place in the Copa America final against Argentina on Monday.
