Manchester United have officially announced Ruben Amorim as their new head coach, signing him on a contract until 2027 with the option for an additional year. The 38-year-old Portuguese manager arrives from Sporting CP, where he led the club to historic successes, including their first league title in 19 years. United will pay Sporting an €11 million (£9.2m) release clause for his services. Amorim will take over from Ruud van Nistelrooy, who will continue as interim manager until Amorim officially starts on November 11.

Amorim, regarded as one of Europe’s most promising young coaches, transformed Sporting during his tenure, winning two Primeira Liga titles and two consecutive Portuguese League Cups. Known for his tactical versatility, Amorim led Sporting to unprecedented heights, including a near-perfect season where they lost only one game in the league. The former Benfica and Braga midfielder’s first match in charge of United will be against Ipswich Town on November 24.

Manchester United, currently struggling in 14th place in the Premier League, hope Amorim’s appointment will provide a much-needed turnaround. United’s statement highlighted Amorim’s success both as a player and coach, expressing excitement at his potential impact on the club’s ambitions.
