Former Manchester United defender Chris Smalling endured a horror debut for Saudi Pro League side Al Fayha, as he scored an own goal and was sent off in a 5-0 loss to Al Raed. Just days after his move from AS Roma, the 34-year-old inadvertently opened the scoring for the visitors by turning a cross into his own net in the 6th minute.
Smalling’s misfortune continued when he was shown a straight red card 10 minutes after halftime for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. His dismissal left Al Fayha struggling, and Al Raed capitalized, securing their first win of the season and moving up to eighth place.
Al Fayha remain rooted at the bottom of the league after this heavy defeat.
