Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has defended midfielder Enzo Fernandez following backlash over a video where Fernandez sang a chant deemed racist and transphobic after Argentina’s Copa America victory. The incident prompted an internal investigation by Chelsea.

France defender Wesley Fofana condemned the chant, highlighting ongoing issues of racism in football. Fernandez has since apologized publicly on Instagram, expressing regret and insisting the offensive language did not reflect his beliefs.

Maresca, speaking during Chelsea’s pre-season tour in the USA, believes Fernandez had no malicious intent. He emphasized the player’s youth and good character, noting the apology and the club’s response. Maresca doesn’t foresee any difficulties reintegrating Fernandez into the team upon his return on July 29th, missing friendlies against Wrexham and Celtic but potentially rejoining for a match against Club America.

Despite the controversy, Maresca remains supportive, asserting that Fernandez’s actions were a mistake made in the excitement of the celebration and do not define his character.
