Saul “Canelo” Alvarez retained his unified super middleweight title with a commanding unanimous decision over Edgar Berlanga in Las Vegas. Alvarez knocked Berlanga down in the third round and maintained relentless pressure throughout the 12 rounds. Judges scored the fight 118-109, 118-109, and 117-110 in favor of Alvarez, improving his record to 62-2-2 (39 KOs).
Berlanga, who started his career with 16 straight first-round knockouts, struggled to find his rhythm against the experienced Alvarez. After being dropped by a left hook in the third, Berlanga gamely fought on but couldn’t match Alvarez’s punishing body blows and tactical superiority. Despite being warned for an intentional headbutt and taunting Alvarez in the final round, Berlanga fell to 22-1.
Alvarez, celebrating another victory on Mexican Independence Day weekend, responded to critics, stating, “Now what are they going to say? I fight younger fighters? I’m the best fighter in the world.” This win marked Alvarez’s fifth straight points victory, with his last stoppage win coming in 2021.
On the undercard, Erislandy Lara retained his WBA middleweight title with a ninth-round stoppage of Danny Garcia. Lara dropped Garcia in the ninth, and Garcia’s corner called for the fight to be stopped, improving Lara’s record to 31-3-3.
