Czech tennis star and reigning Wimbledon champion, Barbora Krejcikova, confirmed on Sunday that she will not participate in this month’s Australian Open as she continues to recover from a persistent back injury. The world number 10, who made a stunning run to the quarter-finals in Melbourne last year, revealed the injury had troubled her during the Asian leg of the WTA Tour and seemed to worsen at the WTA Finals in Riyadh last November.
Krejcikova, who took to social media platform X to announce her withdrawal, expressed her disappointment: “Unfortunately, my back injury, which troubled me at the end of last season, is still not fully healed. It’s disappointing because I love playing in Melbourne and have such great memories from reaching the quarter-finals last year.” She assured fans that she is diligently working on her recovery and looks forward to returning to action soon.
The Australian Open, which runs from January 12th to 26th, will proceed without one of its top contenders, as Krejcikova focuses on regaining full health before returning to competition.
