Aston Villa have secured the signing of Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen for £35 million. The 22-year-old, currently with the Netherlands national team for Euro 2024, joined Villa following a successful loan spell at Borussia Dortmund, where he contributed to the team’s run to the Champions League final.

Maatsen is Villa’s second acquisition of the summer, following the signing of striker Lewis Dobbin from Everton. Chelsea originally signed Maatsen in 2019 from PSV Eindhoven, and he gained experience through loan stints at Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, Burnley, and Dortmund.

Notably, Maatsen was instrumental in Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League in the 2022-23 season, earning a spot in the Championship Team of the Season with four goals in 39 appearances. Despite starting the last season at Chelsea, he struggled for consistent playing time under Mauricio Pochettino, appearing in 15 matches across all competitions before moving to Dortmund on a six-month loan in January.

While at Dortmund, Maatsen made 23 appearances and scored three goals, helping the team to a fifth-place finish in the Bundesliga. His departure from Chelsea sees him leave after 16 appearances for the club.
