Andy Murray has revealed that he’ll be taking an extended break from tennis following an ankle injury he picked up during the Miami Open.
The 36-year-old British player received medical attention after the incident occurred towards the end of the third set in his intense match against Tomas Machac, which ended in a narrow defeat with a score of 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).
Murray confirmed that he sustained a significant injury, including a full rupture of his anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and a near full-thickness rupture of his calcaneofibular ligament (CFL). As a result, he will be consulting with a specialist to determine the best course of action moving forward.
This setback puts Murray’s immediate future in tennis in question as he focuses on his recovery and rehabilitation.
Andy Murray, a three-time major winner, faces a tough setback with an ankle injury after returning from hip surgery in 2019. Despite the challenge, Murray vows to return, even joking about being back with “one hip and no ankle ligaments” when the time is right. At nearly 37, Murray had hinted at retiring after this summer but hopes to compete in another Olympic Games. With Wimbledon and the Olympics approaching, Murray’s ranking is at 59th, but he could still qualify for the Olympics due to withdrawals or as a former champion.
