Carlos Alcaraz has expressed his determination to honor Rafael Nadal by helping Spain secure victory at the Davis Cup Finals, marking the legendary player’s final tournament before retirement.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion Nadal will end his illustrious career at the event in Malaga, where Spain faces the Netherlands in the quarter-finals on Tuesday. Spain has won the Davis Cup six times, with Nadal playing a pivotal role in four of those victories.
“It’s probably the most special tournament I’ll play in my career, because of what’s happening, because of the circumstances,” said Alcaraz, the 21-year-old world number three.
“The Davis Cup has always been a tournament that I’d love to win one day. I’m passionate about representing Spain. Having Rafa by my side, knowing it’s his last tournament, will make it much more special.”
Alcaraz’s Journey with Nadal
Alcaraz debuted in the Davis Cup in 2022, three years after Spain’s last triumph. Earlier this year, he teamed up with Nadal in the doubles at the Paris Olympics, where the pair reached the quarter-finals.
For Alcaraz, the opportunity to compete alongside his childhood idol adds emotional weight to the Davis Cup Finals.
“No player deserves more to finish the incredible career he had with a title, and I know how special the Davis Cup is for him,” Alcaraz told the ATP website. “It will be a difficult challenge, but winning it for Rafa is a huge motivation.”
Nadal’s Legacy
Nadal retires as one of the most decorated players in tennis history, second only to Novak Djokovic in men’s singles Grand Slam titles. His dedication to Spain in team competitions, particularly the Davis Cup, has cemented his legacy as a national hero.
Alcaraz emphasized how important Nadal’s farewell is to him:
“Rafa’s farewell is much more important, at least for me. The Davis Cup is every year. Rafa’s farewell, saying goodbye to a legend of the sport, unfortunately only happens once. Personally, I’m very excited to be by Rafa’s side for his farewell.”
Spain will aim to rally around their two stars as they seek to give Nadal a fitting send-off by adding another Davis Cup title to their storied history.
