Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou addressed the issue of mental health in football following Richarlison’s candid interview about his battle with depression. Postecoglou acknowledged that mental health problems are not uncommon among players but are often concealed behind closed doors.
He commended Richarlison for his bravery in speaking out and emphasized that footballers, like anyone else, are susceptible to such struggles regardless of their fame or financial status.Postecoglou stressed that football is no exception to the prevalence of mental health issues found in society, but it often remains veiled by a “strong curtain” within the industry.
He noted that while Richarlison’s interview may have been striking due to its rarity in football, it merely brought to light a reality that many individuals within the sport face silently.
Despite the outward appearance of success and glamour, players and those involved in football are not immune to mental health challenges. In addition to discussing mental health, Postecoglou defended Tottenham’s decision to participate in a post-season friendly against Newcastle in Australia, just days after the conclusion of the domestic season.
He confirmed that all fit players, including those set to participate in Euro 2024 like England’s James Maddison, would travel for the fixture.
Postecoglou’s comments implied that such scheduling decisions are part of the reality of modern football, where club and national team commitments often intersect, and coaches must navigate the demands of both realms.
