Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has voiced his stance on the controversy surrounding the design of England’s football team kit, emphasizing the importance of preserving the integrity of the St George’s Cross.

Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer also expressed reservations about Nike’s altered design, which incorporates navy, light blue, and purple alongside the traditional red. Despite calls for reconsideration, there are currently no plans to recall or modify the shirt. Sunak highlighted the significance of national flags as symbols of pride and identity, cautioning against unnecessary alterations.

The debate has sparked discussions across social media platforms, with the culture secretary underscoring the importance of prioritizing fans’ preferences and preserving national heritage. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer echoed sentiments of pride in the flag’s unifying role, advocating for a return to the original design.

Meanwhile, Nike defends its reinterpretation of the St George’s Cross, describing it as a modern homage to England’s football history, specifically the iconic 1966 World Cup-winning team’s training attire.

The new England football kit, launched on March 21st, offers an “authentic” version priced at £124.99 for adults and £119.99 for children, with a “stadium” version available at £84.99 and £64.99 respectively. Despite criticisms, the FA stands by Nike’s design, rejecting suggestions of altering the St George’s flag, traditionally featuring a bright red cross on a white background. Former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton voiced his disapproval of the changes, citing a preference for tradition, while midfielder Declan Rice and Lionesses striker Alessia Russo praised the kit.

However, former FA managing director Adrian Bevington expressed reservations, stating he wouldn’t have approved the design. The flag at Wembley Stadium remains unchanged, despite criticism from figures like Nigel Farage, who labeled the new emblem as disconnected from the St George’s Cross.
